Check the connections

Your car’s battery should have two cables attached to it. Check the connections on those cables for signs of corrosion and loose connections. If you spot corrosion, use a metal wire brush to clean the battery terminals and cable connections. If the connections are loose, use a wrench to tighten the bolts on them, but avoid over-tightening, which can damage the battery.

Avoid battery drain

Car batteries can drain if your vehicle sits idle for too long. The battery loses its charge, and its overall lifespan shortens. If you don’t drive regularly, try to run the engine for 15 minutes once or twice to maintain battery health or use a battery charger with a trickle charging feature. Longer drives are often better for your battery’s health than frequent short trips.

Visual inspection

Sometimes we can tell just from looking at your battery if you need to replace it, especially if it’s noticeably swelling, bulging, cracked or leaking.

Check for corrosion and clean the terminals

We’ll clean away the corrosion from your battery terminals as well as check the connections are tight enough.

Testing battery voltage and performance

We’ll measure the voltage reading of your battery and perform a basic load test to assess whether it can handle the demands of starting your car. This will give us an accurate idea of whether your battery can be repaired or whether we need to replace it entirely.
