Car Battery Replacement and Testing

It’s a horrible feeling. You turn your key in your car’s ignition only to hear a feeble crank, or even complete silence. Maybe you left your headlights on, maybe there’s a completely different cause, but either way, your battery is dead.

Your car’s battery does more than you may know, powering everything from the engine to the headlights to every electronic accessory in your vehicle. Your battery has a massive role to play in your vehicle’s operation, providing the initial jolt of electricity that gets your car started.

While a typical car battery is made to last about three to five years, certain factors like frequent short trips, extreme temperatures or parasitic draws can shorten its lifespan. If your battery is giving you problems or, worse, failing to start your car at all, NC Autos provides car battery replacement and testing in the Moreton Bay region.

How to maintain your car battery

Taking a few simple measures on board can help your car battery last:

Check the connections

Your car’s battery should have two cables attached to it. Check the connections on those cables for signs of corrosion and loose connections. If you spot corrosion, use a metal wire brush to clean the battery terminals and cable connections. If the connections are loose, use a wrench to tighten the bolts on them, but avoid over-tightening, which can damage the battery.

Avoid battery drain

Car batteries can drain if your vehicle sits idle for too long. The battery loses its charge, and its overall lifespan shortens. If you don’t drive regularly, try to run the engine for 15 minutes once or twice to maintain battery health or use a battery charger with a trickle charging feature. Longer drives are often better for your battery’s health than frequent short trips.

Signs of car battery problems

Car batteries are usually inspected once a year as part of your general service. However, problems can arise between services and inspections. Here are some common indicators that you’re in need of car battery replacement and testing:

Slow engine turnover and clicking noises

When your battery is low, your car engine may crank sluggishly or simply not turn over at all, giving you nothing but a clicking sound. The click is your starter solenoid trying to engage without the power to do so.

Dim headlights and other electronic issues

A failing car battery puts a large amount of strain on the alternator, which can cause headlights to flicker and dim, and you may experience problems with electrical components like your radio, power windows or heated seats.

The check engine light and other notifications

Your check engine light can appear for all kinds of reasons, including an issue with your car battery. The problem can also cause your battery warning light to activate along with other dashboard lights such as those for power steering or traction control.

A swollen battery

Take a look at your battery. If it’s swollen significantly larger than its regular size, it’s probably been overcharged. Overcharging causes hydrogen gas to build up at a faster rate than it can dissipate, and this is a problem most commonly caused by a faulty voltage regulator.

The car battery testing and replacing process

Dealing with battery problems or even a battery that’s completely dead. An NC Autos mobile mechanic will meet you at a location that suits you and fix the problem. Here’s a brief rundown of our car battery testing and replacement process:

Visual inspection

Sometimes we can tell just from looking at your battery if you need to replace it, especially if it’s noticeably swelling, bulging, cracked or leaking.

Check for corrosion and clean the terminals

We’ll clean away the corrosion from your battery terminals as well as check the connections are tight enough.

Testing battery voltage and performance

We’ll measure the voltage reading of your battery and perform a basic load test to assess whether it can handle the demands of starting your car. This will give us an accurate idea of whether your battery can be repaired or whether we need to replace it entirely.
