Starter Motor Repair

It’s a frustrating experience. You have somewhere to be, but when you put your key in your car’s ignition and turn it, all you get is a couple of clicks. Your car won’t start. While it’s natural to assume a dead battery is the culprit, another possibility is that you may need starter motor repair.

The starter motor plays an important role in igniting an internal combustion engine, working closely with the battery, starter and starter motor solenoid. Turning your car’s ignition switch on signals the starter motor to crank up the engine. Once the engine cranks into life, the starter motor disengages and takes a rest.

Starter motors are strong, reliable and designed to last for a very long time. Yet starter motors can fail due to issues like wear and tear, faulty wiring or loose or corroded connections. Sometimes starter motor repair can save this component and get your car running efficiently again. Other times, it needs replacing entirely.

If your car won’t even start, a mobile mechanic can make things easier by bringing starter motor services to you. NC Autos offers mobile car repairs and services throughout the Moreton Bay region, including the suburbs of Caboolture, Chermside and Warner and beyond. Signs of starter motor trouble

There are a number of different clues than can indicate you’re in need of starter motor repairs. Some of the most common include:

Starter Motor Repair

Your car engine won’t start

It’s a common problem but a frustrating one, and it can have a variety of causes. No matter how much you turn the key in the ignition, your car simply won’t roar into life like it usually does. Flat batteries and engine issues are common causes of this problem, but it’s worth checking your starter motor too.

Grinding noises

There’s a set of gears between the starter and the flywheel and when these gears wear out, you’re likely to hear a grinding sound. In this situation, it’s important to seek out starter motor repairs quickly: the longer you leave it, the more the grinding will damage the flywheel and the more expensive your repairs are likely to get. Other unusual sounds such as buzzing and whirring can signal problems with components like the pinion gear.

Common starter motor issues

It’s very common for starter motors to fail in a few different ways. Some of the most common starter motor issues that can arise include:

The starter motor stays on

Your starter motor should automatically switch off after you start the engine. If it stays on, it’s likely the solenoid’s contacts have permanently welded together – particularly if you also hear a grinding or clicking noise. The longer you drive the car in this state, the more damage you’re likely to do to the mechanic and electrical systems. Your best option is to shut it down and call a mobile mechanic to replace the starter motor.

The starter motor turns… but it doesn’t turn the motor

Your starter motor’s pinion gear engages with the flywheel using a small part named the Bendix. If you turn your key and all you hear is a feeble whirring or grinding noise with no action from the engine, there could be a few issues at play. Your Bendix might be struggling to muster sufficient force for the push, the teeth on the starter or ring gear may be damaged or one of the bolts connecting the starter to the transmission may have come loose.

Your car only starts sporadically

If your car starts on some occasions but fails on others and you know there’s nothing wrong with the battery, the starter motor solenoid is the issue. The starter motor solenoid is responsible for sending full current to the starter, but an issue like bad internal wiring can interrupt the process and cause it to fail. Unfortunately, sporadic starting is an issue that often worsens over time.

To repair or replace your starter motor

Whether you should repair or replace your starter motor depends on the extent of the damage. While starter motor repair can fix minor issues like a faulty solenoid or worn-out brushes, it’s necessary to fully replace a starter motor with severe damage. If you’re not sure whether repair or replacement is in order, NC Autos is happy to help.
