Engine Repairs

Common engine problems

Your car’s engine is a complex mechanical system made up of various cylinders, pistons, valves, plugs and shafts. Your ‘check engine’ light is designed to let you know when an issue occurs that could compromise your safety or your car’s reliability, performance or emissions.

The most common engine problems you’re likely to experience include:

Overheating

Overheating can lead to serious engine damage if not addressed quickly. Common causes of overheating include a malfunctioning thermostat, faulty radiator, broken belt or blown head gasket.

Knocking sounds

Knocking or banging sounds from the engine can be signs of worn-out interior components or problems with the combustion process.

Poor fuel efficiency

A common drop in fuel efficiency has a range of potential causes, but some common culprits are clogged air filters, faulty spark plugs, dirty fuel injectors and incorrect engine oil.

Colourful exhaust smoke

If your exhaust smoke starts coming out in strange colours, that’s a sure sign of engine trouble. Different colours are signs of different issues: white or gray smoke indicates oil or coolant burning, while black smoke is a sign of burning excessive fuel.

Electrical issues

Issues with your engine’s electrical components like your starter or ignition can prevent your engine from starting or cause rough idling and stalling once you get going.

Tips for caring for your engine

If you’re like most drivers, you don’t spend a lot of time thinking about your engine as long as it gets you from A to B. But taking a few steps to care for this vital component of your car can increase its efficiency and longevity and reduce the chance of you needing engine repairs.

Here are some tips for caring for your engine:

  • Change your oil regularly to keep your engine parts well-lubricated and reduce the chance of your engine overheating. While you’re at it, change the filter so you can continue keeping impurities out.
  • Make sure you have the proper amount of coolant in your engine.
  • Check for leaks – old, cracked hoses can cause oil and other fluids to seep out of your engine.
  • Fill up your petrol tank before it gets very low so your engine isn’t pulling fuel from the very bottom, where sediment and muck gathers.
  • Try to cut down on stop-start driving, as your engine functions best when it’s running at a continuous speed.

And if you still have to deal with the ‘check engine’ light coming on despite your precautions, a mobile mechanic can meet you where you are and fix your engine dramas.
