Clutch Replacement & Repair

If you’ve noticed a stalling engine, difficulty shifting gears or a loose or sticking pedal, there’s a high chance you’re facing clutch problems.

The clutch is an important part of a manual vehicle, allowing you to seamlessly shift gears and increase or decrease your speed as needed. While it’s possible to drive a manual without a clutch, this can damage the transmission and prematurely wear down the synchronisers. It can even lead to dangerous accidents. To preserve the quality of your driving experience and the safety of your passengers, it’s best to see a mechanic that specialises in clutch replacement and repair.

If your clutch has given out and you don’t want to have to learn to float gears just to get it to a repair shop (irritating your synchros in the process), a mobile mechanic can help. They can bring quality clutch replacement and repairs to you so you can get on with your day as quickly and safely as possible.

Clutch Replacement & Repair

What is a clutch?

Regardless of what your wheels are doing, your car’s engine is always in motion. Your clutch is the device that allows you to disconnect the wheels from the engine and stop the car at any time without stalling.

Your manual car’s clutch has a flywheel that connects to the engine and a pressure plate that connects to the transmission. When your foot is off the clutch, the engine and the transmission shaft are spinning at the same speed. When you press the pedal, a hydraulic piston or cable pushes on the release fork and disengages the engine while you shift gears. The clutch provides you with greater control over your car and in many cases, better fuel economy. But just like every car component, things can go wrong with your clutch.

Warning signs of clutch problems

Common early warning signs of clutch-related issues include:

  • Your car slips out of gear, especially on hills or when moving again after stopping.
  • Your car seems to ‘hesitate’ rather than shifting into the next gear right away.
  • Your engine revs but the wheels don’t move along with it.
  • Your engine stalls, either when you’re stopped or while you’re still driving.
  • Your clutch pedal feels sticky, hard, loose or another unusual sensation.
  • Your car shakes, you smell the scent of burning or you hear unusual noises.

Any of these signs can indicate that you’re in need of clutch replacement and repair.

Common clutch problems and repairs

Most clutches have long lifespans, lasting well over 100,000 kms. The more you drive, however, the quicker yours can wear down. Some common clutch problems (and their likely causes) include:

Slipping

Over time, the material on a clutch pedal wears down. If you’re revving your engine but not picking up speed as fast as you’d expect, that’s the sign of a worn-down clutch lacking the ability to hold onto the flywheel and pressure plate.

Difficulty switching gears

Problems with the clutch cable or the hydraulic system can make it harder for the wheels to disengage from the engine, leading to shifting problems that can cause damage to the gearbox. The same issue can also cause the clutch to become loose or stuck.

Rattling noises

If you hear a rattling noise every time you press on the clutch, that’s frequently an indication of a worn throwout bearing. A relatively small part of your car’s system, the throwout bearing nevertheless has the huge responsibility of disengaging the car’s engine while you shift gears. A degraded throwout bearing can cause all kinds of problems including vibrations, strange noises and lagging or difficulty when shifting gears.

The clutch repair and replacement process

It takes professionals with extensive experience in car repairs to know whether a damaged clutch can be repaired or whether it needs to be replaced entirely. NC Autos has the skills, the technology and the tools to assess your transmission and identify the cause of your problems. We can easily determine whether the clutch needs something fairly simple like a part replaced or a full-scale replacement. Clutch replacement and repair is a difficult job that involves steps like disconnecting the battery and mounting the gearbox. It’s a task best left in very capable hands.
